On a personal note: This is my last challenge with the Pixie Dust Team. I have really enjoyed my time with Pixie Dust Studio and with all the Pixies. They are a great group of ladies. With my daughter in school and many extracurricular activities I just don't have the time to craft for myself. With the new year I decided it was time to get back to the mountain of unfinished projects (like the 3 years of pictures waiting to be scrapbooked) I have been meaning to work on for ages. I would also like to have the time to explore some other crafty areas like knitting, art journaling, and the photoshop class I still really need to take. Thanks to all you Pixie fans that have left me comments of the past year. I love to hear from you all. Best of luck to Kathy and all the Pixies! Don't be strangers.

Altered Alice Chapter 11 Challenge - Stripes

Happy new year! When I think of Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, I always think stripes and plaids. Lewis Carroll does not mention the patterns they are wearing, but so many illustrations and movies have clad them in mismatched stripes and patterns. Your challenge this month is to use STRIPES.

Jenny Doh, formerly the managing editor of the famous Stampington publications, has started an artist's community website called CRESCENDOh. There is an online shop selling all kinds of things including charming CRESCENDOh clear stamps, including the Alice in Wonderland by Danita set that the design team is showing off. But the heart of the site is all the stories; stories by artists of all kinds, stampers, quilters, paper crafters. Each shares a tale of how art has changed their life. For some it is a joyous outlet, but for many others it has been a way to stay afloat in times of tragedy or grief. As I thought about this challenge, the theme of STRIPES seemed appropriate. Stripes decorate circus tents and tents of the knights of old. Stripes are birthday wrapping paper and elegant Regency wallpaper. Stripes are the traditional garb of prisoners, and stripes are also how the marks of a whip are described. Stripes can represent so many different things, and the creative process has been many things to the people who have contributed stories to the CRESCENDOh site.

Author Jenny Doh is donating a signed copy of her latest book, Art Saves, which is not only full of eye candy but is also full of the stories of how art changes lives. "Discover not only the HOW but also the WHY, through the stunning projects and unique stories of 20 exciting multi-media artists." For my card I used a sketch from the Card Patterns Sketch #147 challenge. The hearts challenge gave me the chance to use one of my favorite Martha border punches. The embellishments are ribbon, heart buttons tied with twine and a flat back button from American Crafts.

Altered Alice Chapter 11 Challenge, Week 2 - Stripes

When I think of Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, I always think stripes and plaids. Lewis Carroll does not mention the patterns they are wearing, but so many illustrations and movies have clad them in mismatched stripes and patterns. Your challenge this month is to use STRIPES.

I made a art journal page of what I imagine Alice's living room wall would look like. She has a trendy mushroom color stripe painted on her walls. I used painters tape to mask off the white areas. Alice's "family photos" wall is made up of a lot of dies to make frames and a frame stamp set I have for the center picture and the mushroom picture. I used copic markers and paint for the violet areas. I think all her living room needs now is a violet couch, some black end tables and a mirrored lamp.

The window was designed by stained glass artist Geoffrey Webb, a must-see for anyone that loves Wonderland. A wonderful Christmas poem by Lewis Carroll is shown in the center three bottom panels, which include characters from Wonderland - the White Rabbit, Dodo, the Caterpillar, Mad Hatter, and more! Our own Sue Roddis visited this chapel and gave me permission to show her close-up photos here, click to enlarge:

Unity Let It Snow Challenge

Last week was my wedding anniversary and I made a card for hubby.

I just got this great tree stamp from Unity. It's called So & So Loves. I did a lot of fussy cutting and paper pieced the whole thing in layers so I could have the blue snowy sky in the back, then the tan to be the carved out part of the tree, and then the wood grain (October Afternoon Weather Vane) on top. The little cardinal is colored in Copic marker. The snow added to the tree is white India ink.

Now to make a Mr. and Mrs. They are both pieces of different stamps. She is Miss Anya Lunge and Special Autumn, he is My Guy Ian and Miss Anya Lounge. Hubby is a hiker so I had to get that backpack in.

The sentiment is from Papertrey Mixed Messages, and the tag is Jar Label Die. Twine from the Twinery in Maraschino. I distressed the BasicGrey Blitzen paper with distress ink in tea dye.

Week 2, CHAPTER 10: A Lewis Christmas Carroll to All!

This month my project didn't go how I had planned. I had planned to make an ornament that died a horrible death by glue-gun-acide. I would explain but it just make me look stupid. So plan be was born. This time it's a snow globe minus the liquid (I wasn't going to deal with water proofing on a last minute project).

I started with a plastic snow globe I got at Micheal's, they sell for $6.99 but were 1/2 price. I have been itching to use this Alice stamp from Stamping Bella since hubby brought her back to me from a recent business trip to Toronto. (disclaimer: No he didn't do it on his own. Anytime he travels I check to see if any great craft stores are close and send him with a list categorized by priority. If you try this with your hubby make sure you keep the list and the stores phone number. Then if he is all nervous about picking up such items you can call the store and have them ready to go. All he has to do is pick up and pay. I sound insane, but a girl has to feed the habit.)

So back to my project. I wanted to use this Alice but she is holding a big tea cup in the image. So the wreath seemed like a good solution to covering that up. I also paper pieced her dress with designer paper from Martha Stewart Woodland collection (this is the same paper that is used on the bottom band). The wreath is made from some vintage garland that had belonged to my grandmother. I twisted it around my finger and glued it down, then added some red bling to look like berries.

On the snow globe base I glued a green paper circle and then hot glued the candy canes standing up. Once dry I added the snow flakes and inserted the base to the globe.

Next was decorating the outside. I used a Martha Stewart border punch to make the red band around the base. There was a gap behind the band so I added the green sparkle ribbon. For the banner I just stamped the sentiment on a strip of paper and cut the end. Then scuff the edges with red ink. To fold is without a sharp fold I rolled the paper around the end of a small paint brush.

The ornament top came from the first defunct project. I cut the wire that holds it inside the ornament short. Then I bent the metal edges up so it sat flush with the top of the globe.

The Altered Alice CHAPTER 9 Challenge - Week 4: Autumn Colors in Wonderland

I wonder if the Wonderland story took place in the Fall of the year? Autumn has arrived in the northern hemisphere. Just as Alice recognized the court characters as playing cards, the trees are losing their cloak of green chlorophyll and showing their true colors of gold, burgundy, scarlet, chartreuse and orange are emerging. Your challenge is to show us a project drenched in fall colors!

Our prize this month is an A5 sized unmounted stamp set from IndigoBlu (a £13 value), or an equivalent amount of A6 stamps. IndigoBlu is a fantastic new British stamp company that makes "Quintessentially English Rubber Stamps" right there in England.

The design team will be working with these two fantastic Alice stamp sets, titled appropriately "Alice I" and "Alice II". Most Americans don't know what A5 and A6 mean so I'll just tell you, these sets are really big!

For my project I made a domino necklace charm. On the back of a domino I smudged Adirondack alcohol ink (Ginger, Meadow, Butterscotch, Raisin, Copper), then stamped the images from IndigoBlu with Archival Ink. Once dry I covered the top with glossy accents and sprinkled a few microbeads to resemble stars. The edges of the domino are wrapped in strong double sided adhesive tape and then covered in the copper microbeads. I added some fun Tim Holtz trinkets on jump rings.

For my project I made a packing tape purse. I got the idea and instructions from the book Kaleidoscope: Ideas & Projects to Spark Your Creativity.

I found my destiny cards (tarot cards) at a yard sale.

You need good quality clear packing tape for this project.

First, cut strips of packing tape a couple inches wider than the back side of your purse. Lay them sticky side up, overlapping the tape strips by about 1/2". Carefully lay your cards onto the tape face up. Then I added my images and embellishments. Now more tape on the front side to cover it and you (guessed it) more tape to minter the corners to form the purse. I used decorative tape for my edges and corners. I covered cardstock with more tape for the handles and added grommets for a little added strength. Did you notice the tape on the bottom is Alice tape? I've had it for a long time, finally a chance to use it.

This past Sunday my friend and I went to Bachman's Fall Ideas House in Minneapolis. I took tons of photos for everyone to enjoy. If your near the twin cities you have until Oct. 9th to go. It's only $5 a ticket. What a steal!

Using text as pattern is a trend right now that I really love. Your challenge is to use text as nonsense - not to read but as pattern on your project! Of course you can still have words or sentiments, but we also need to see text used in a non-reading way. I have a stack of old books and dictionaries that I use for this purpose.

I made a portable shrine for this challenge. I've been reading the book Kaleidoscope ideas & projects to spark your creativity and found the template for my project. I enlarged the template to 8 X 10 and printed it on heavy cardstock. After covering with a coat of gesso I water painted with Peerless Transparent Water Colors in dark green and sky blue. Once dry, I used the key stamp from Stamp Attack Alice 2 to make a pattern on the base. The text pieces are dictionary pages glued to cardstock, then stamped with Alice 2 and distressed with Wild Honey Distress Ink. The grass border behind Alice is by Martha Stewart. A little distress ink on the top, bottom and middle pieces (from the template I enlarged from the book) and the painted surfaces to finish it off.

I loved the stamp set and had a lot of fun using it in different ways. I got very clean images from this rubber. Thanks so much Stamp Attack!

Back to School

I know, I know. I've been a bad blogger this summer. I hope to soon get back to blogging more regularly after this next week. Our summer was filled with park play groups, swimming lessons, and martial arts. Most days I felt like a taxi service. Pea started Kindergarten this week and loves it. It's hard to believe my baby is in Kindergarten.

The past few weeks have been the busiest of the summer. My parents came for a visit, we went to the State Fair,

and the Minnesota Renaissance Festival

.....and things aren't slowing down this week. I'm taking the Copic marker intermediate certification, then Junk Bonanza, and then 3 days of ScrapFest. Fun!!!!!! I hope to bring back lots of photos to share.
